Yuen Long Hong Kong Pastry and Bun

I spotted this pastry shop when I went to Ang Mo Kio. It seems rather new to me but I did checked online and found it has quite a number of branch somewhere else. Yuen Long is a district in Hong Kong, 1st glance I am thinking is this Hang Heung - the one famous with its wife cake? I was a bit disappointed when I found it is not. However, I did try their pastries as it looks good.

I greedily bought the honey-roasted char siew pastry($1.2), wife cake($1.2) and golden salted egg yolk bun($1.3). I personally like all the choice that I chosen, the only thing was I actually ate it the next day. I think it will taste better if you eat it while warm.

Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice

Chicken rice - one of the most famous dish in Singapore and rated must try item if you visit the island. You can easily find this dish almost everywhere, be it hawker center, coffee stall(kopitiam), restaurant etc. So how you define which is the best? I feel that depends to individual preference.

A friend of mine visited Singapore and wished to try out chicken rice, I recalled a few that declared as "Best Chicken Rice In Singapore". I checked their address and found Boon Tong Kee is nearby where I stay. So we just went there. I personally have no preference on which stall to go and be frank, I feel most chicken rice tasted quite the same and I don't really know how to differentiate sometime. Some may focus on the rice, some on the chicken. My level only can differentiate if the rice suite my taste and for chicken, till now I still don't really can tell which is the best.

We ordered the famous chicken rice and some vegetables to go with. Boon Tong Kee has 7 branches, so I can said it is still quite famous among Singapore.  After the meal, I asked my friend for feedback. How she feel the taste of the chicken rice here compare to her country? She answered:"It is just as usual chicken rice." The rest of the vegetables tasted average but I feel the portion is small on what we paid. Total bill damaged is $39.65 with drinks. They are charging you for the towel, so if you do not use it, you may return to them.

Signature Chicken Rice: Rice $0.60++, Chicken $10++; rice is smaller than usual so normally guy will get 2 of them. I like the rice, tasted good and I like the way it comes as a whole which is not the sticky version. Chicken tasted as normal to me.

Deep Fried Beancurd($7++) - looks nice but tasted average. I found a bit oil taste so I dun really like it.

Kang Kong($8++) - tasted quite nice but portion is small.

Marugoto Shokudou

I had a Japanese lunch at this restaurant.  Originally I wanted to come here for weekend one for one sushi but in the end we went for the set menu. There is not many people even on a Sunday lunch time, it may due to the location which is not near MRT, so there is no problem in getting a seat. I am not sure about the crowd for dinner. Food overall tasted quite good but price is like standard restaurant price in town.

Buta Shogoyaki ($15.8++) - my friend got this and he said is nice. I tried the grilled pork, nice!

Sushi Set ($18.80++) - I had this sushi set as it has mixed tempura,  sashimi salad and some assorted sushi. The sushi itself is covered by 2 layers of fresh meat. Overall tasted quite good but the portion is quite a lot for me. We get the usual Green Tea ($1.50++) for our drink.

Fish & Co

I can't recall when is my last visit but seems it is really a long time I never visit this fish place.  I met my friend at AMK Hub and we choose between Japanese cuisine or fish. We said let's go for the shorter queue. This was why we are here.

I always like to order seafood platter for 1 as more choices but recently having special diet which need me to have vegetables. I checked with the staff and they cannot change the fries to coleslaw. Bad for me so I was dilemma on which one to take. I ended up getting myself king prawn.

Grilled King Prawn ($20.95++) - When it served, I found this is the big head prawn that we usually can get at my home place. It allows you to choose with 4 sides - coleslaw, rice, french fries and baked pumpkin. They removed the sauteed vegetables and replace with baked pumpkin. The prawns are nice, really good!!! I remember their rice is good too and I am right, it is like seafood baked rice, love it. Coleslaw is average.

Baked Ginza Salmon($19.95++) - 2 thick baked sashimi-grade salmon, lavished with furikake, finished with zesty balsamic vinaigrette. It tasted quite good, served with baked pumpkin and fries. Baked pumpkin just nice, but there are some could be softer.

Cheng San Market & Cooked Food Centre

Although stayed at this area for almost a year, but I seldom came to the market, one of the reason was when I reached home at night, most of the stall closed. I tried quite a few stall here but I cannot recall which is the one. Food here tasted generally average but definitely a good place if you don't know what to have.

There is famous coffee stall with long queue, due to curiosity I joined the queue and the coffee tasted quite good. Another popular stuff is the Teochew porridge which I never get a chance to try out but I always saw a lot of people having that.

On my last day at this area, I visited the market try to get some breakfast and I attracted by this soya bean because they have Red Bean Soya Bean($1.20), I like red bean and I feel it should taste good with soya and I am right, I like the taste. The soya drink itself tasted quite smooth, some might have powder taste but here you won't have that.

My Taste

A small eatery place at AMK 10 housing estate, not near MRT, you probably need to take bus but still walk-able distance if you cut through the Cheng San CC. It is quite busy especially on weekend morning, not sure about the crowd on weekday as I never been there during weekday morning. The food here generally hawker price but with lot of choices.

You can get various thick toast, congee, yam cake, steam rice roll, various drinks and desserts. I got myself the yam cake and steam rice rolls. I can't remember exact how much I paid but definitely below $2 for the stuff I ordered. Both taste average to me. I then found out their famous is the thick toast. That will be my next item if I will ever visit again.

Just Like It

The new ice cream stall at AMK with different concept - A Revolutionary of NEW Ice Cream. What they have? They don't serve normal ice cream. They make ice cream on the spot in just 5mins. You might think our normal way of ice cream we need to put in freezer for at least 1-2hours before we can have it.

The secret is they use nitrogen to make the ice cream. It is a concept from Australia and 1st in Singapore. I tried because of the novelty. You see all the staff dress in scientists attire, the container they use is the lab tabung uji. 1st when I saw it, I feel like too chemical and totally dun feel like want to have it. This time me and my friends passed by and she was attracted by this new idea. Since we were sharing, why not. We ordered common like mango taste. The Chef'choice is the New Popcorn. You can find the durian on the list too.  It sells at $5.90 for regular and $9.50 for large, compare with other ice-cream shop, it is slightly more expensive.

You can stand there and see how your ice cream is made while waiting. 1st the staff will pour the nitrogen out then add the mango flavour to it then mix it well. You will see all the cool gas coming out from the mixing bowl. After few mins, your ice cream is ready.

How it taste? It tasted like normal ice cream but smoother. Not too sweet but I don't really like it as the mango flavour tasted a bit artificial. It said on the poster:
1. 100% Original
2. 0% Artificial
3. 0% Additive
4. 0% Sugar Added
5. 0% Coloring
6. 0% Stabilizer

I am not sure is it when we saw the way how it was made, we feel kind of weird. I start to think is it all the ice cream that have the same kind of texture are made the same way. They are opening a new outlet at Resort World.

Very big tan nitrogen, looks scary. I wonder if they get it from here or only for display purpose.

I went back the other day bringing another friend to try out this special ice-cream. This time we got durian flavour. Taste not bad, you can eat some durian flesh.

Prata Raya

There used to have Ah Mei to serve good prata and nasi briyani inside AMK Hub. I am not too sure about other branch but at least AMK one tasted good. After renovation, it is gone but friend told me it moved to where the Old Chang Kee was last time.

I only tried it few months later after its renovation and found this is not Ah Mei. It is still selling prata but replaced with Prata Raya. I love teh tarik and prata so much. So how is the prata tasted? Not my kind of liking, not cripsy and tasted average but if I have prata craving and find no other place, I will still come here. The fried chicken is not crispy and it was cold. The teh tarik tasted not really good but my friend feel ok for her, I can have better elsewhere. Price is reasonable and it is air-conditioned. It was getting crowded when it come to late night.

They do sell other food like murtabak etc, may be I should try that next time.

UFoodFare(AMK Hub)

This newly renovated aircorn food court under NTUC is one of my choice if I wanted to have simple food. I tried the small hotpot noodles($4.80). Tasted average but quite little ingredients, besides, the soup have a lot of fish bones which I think should be filter.

Canton Paradise

I had birthday celebration dinner at Canton Paradise@AMK. Reason of choosing this place because AMK quite central then it is air-conditioned. It indeed a wise choice when you see the haze outside.  Staying indoor definitely better than outdoor.

The food portion here consider small if I tried to match with the price. Tasted wise quite standard, the food that we ordered no wow factor. I will still back to have dinner here if I want to dine in AMK. They served dim sum whole day until 4pm. Probably next time I can come for the dim sum.

Sauteed French Beans with Minced Pork and Preserved Olive($13.80++) - This is nice, my favourite among all the dishes. It has some crispy taste and make the dish great for me.

Cripsy Fried Cod Fish with Plum Sauce($12.90++) - average, the cod fish is soft.

Milk Tea至尊奶茶($2.60++) - Not that smooth, is ok. The cup that they use kind of cute and interesting.

Deep Fried Pork Ribs with Minced Garlic($16.80++) - This is very out from what we saw in the picture and taste. It is fried ribs with garlic, as you may see in the pictures below there isn't any garlic on top and no garlic taste at all. The ribs kind of hard to eat as it tasted like over fried. Really DEEP fried.

Braised Firm Toufu with Pork Belly and Fish Belly乡下猪肉鱼腩闷水鬼重($18.80++) - it has a very interesting chinese name, tasted ok, but where is my pork belly? I did tried fish belly but i din see another.

Wok-fried Cabbage with Waxed Meat and Vermicelli($14.80++) - the name sounds to me the cabbage is the main character but when I taste it I feel Cabbage & Vermicelli almost the same proportion or Vermicelli will have more. So it tasted like wok friend Vermicelli. I did not like this because it tasted sweet to me.

Poached Chinese Spinash with Egg Trio($13.80++) - I like this vegetables but the one served did not meet my expectation. Tasted is light, it is not meant not salty enough if the overall taste seems lesser. I think I can cook better than this although I am not professional.

Gurney Drive

I went for Penang feast with a friend on the Dumpling Festival Day. I had been passed by this place for quite sometime but never think of going in to try as I feel the food is too hawker style and I think some food court may served the same standard. My friend had suggested it, so I am thinking, may be should try, they may have great food.

If you have been to Penang, you will sure hear about Gurney Drive, it is actually a famous food street in Penang with all great local cuisines. I had been there for once, it is quite good with some, I think is over-priced.

The dining experience is quite good but I dun feel the food worth the money I paid as I can get the same standard at the hawker stall. The only different is the place is air-conditioned, hence, I guess that is why you pay more.

Top Seller, Penang Chay Kway Teow($7.50++) - the portion is not really big, but taste standard. That is a great start for the penang cuisines.

Penang Assam Laksa($5.90++) - not too bad and be very frank, I dun really feel any big different with the normal one but my friend told me the original Penang famous one must must better than this. Overall, I feel ok for me.

Penang Cuttlefish Kang Kong($4.90++) - this is very small portion and the taste is bad to me, especially the sauce they are using. I think the similar one at TPY food court the rojak stall served much much better than this. They are using Penang Prawn sauce too.

Our dessert, King Of Cendol($5.90++) - We ended with quite a good dessert, kind of compensate us with the bad appetizer we had. The different between the king and the normal cendol is the scoop of premium durian added on top. You might think it will taste weird but I feel nice. For those who can taste durian, you should go for the king version.

Geláre Ang Mo Kio Hub

I had to meet a friend last minute at Ang Mo Kio and I suddenly remembered the 50% waffle promotion on Tuesday. I used to feel that this is the best waffles that I tried but I found it depends on the time you went. It is not always that great but still consider one of the good waffles in Singapore.

Tuesday always crowded due to the promotion, hence, queue is expected. This area use to be Ah Mei cafe which had been moved, is quite a quiet place for some small gathering as the place is not big, if you have a big group, it is quite hard to get the seat.

Although Geláre famous for its waffle and ice-cream, it does have some simple set menu for your dinner selection. My friend had the sandwiches set A which come with a choice of coffee, soup and sandwiches. The sandwiches tasted quite nice, the soup a lot to improve and I did not taste the coffee but my friend said it is ok.

Here come my chocolate chip waffles, this is nice and crispy and we ordered another normal waffles with ice-cream. We found that the chocolate chip waffle tasted better as it is crispier.
