JJ Roll

A very famous cake shop that was recommended by a friend in Ipoh. It seems considered having the best Swiss roll in Ipoh. There are a lot of flavor you can choose from, range from different fruits to vegetables based.

We had Green Tea Swiss Roll(RM15) & Mixed Roll with cream cheese(RM20). There are 4 flavors in the pack - Spinach, Carrot, Banana & Pumpkin. I personally like the Swiss roll as it is really yummy, and the best part is not very sweet. I will visit again if I happen to pass by the place.

There are 2 cute iconic Swiss Rolls in front of the shop which the green on represent happy and the yellow one is kindness.

Ming Yue Confectionery 明裕饼家

Local friend recommended me this old fashion bakery. I tried the Heong Peng  (香饼) from this bakery and I love it. So I got the name of the bakery and decided to get it ourselves when we visited Ipoh.

During our visit,it happened very close to mooncake festival hence they produced only 2 type of pastries and the rest the mooncake. Luckily the item I want is in the list and I underdtand from the boss that xiang bin is the popular item from the shop.

It is now no 1 Heong Peng in my list.

My friend sent me this picture when she read this. As I said the time we visited, it was near to mooncake season, so my sister did bought a box of mooncake home due to she saw quite a lot of people got it and she wanted to try. It is really cheap if compare to the mooncake you get from the mall. She paid RM20+ for a box of mooncake with different flavours. I never try the mooncake but my sister's comment is the mooncake is quite good.

Yee Hup(余合香饼)

Heong Peng (香饼) means fragrant pastries in English. These pastries, which resemble slightly flattened balls, contain a sweet sticky filling made from malt and shallots, which is covered by a flaky baked crust and garnished with sesame seeds on the surface. They are available in many stores around Ipoh and most of the time, this is a MUST BUY item on tourists' list as souvenirs. 

Yee Hup Biscuits was established by Mr. Yee Ah Lek and his beloved wife Madam Wong Chin Haw (founder) as a family business and they started operating their first bakery at their home. It is now very famous and as a local brand it sells the biscuit all the way to other countries. They are also available in other parts of Malaysia and Singapore.

It is now no 2 Heong Peng in my list. The skin of the pastries is crispy and filling a bit sticky. The stickiness is the only thing I don't like. I got the traditional packaging for RM8 with all pastries in one bag. It does sell the pastries in each individual packaging, you just have to add RM1 to it.

Nasi Kandar Yong Suan

My relative recommended this nasi kandar to us. It is quite easy to locate, you just have to find Ipoh Police Station and you are almost there. I saw a long queue at the counter and we joined the queue. After that some good people told us that if we dine in, there is no need for the queue. The queue is for those take away. We then asked him what is the best for this Nasi Kandar, they told us the fried chicken and the beef rendang.

We got both, one portion of beef and 2 pieces of chicken which costed us RM11. My brother said the price is reasonable or consider cheap as you hardly can get this price in KL. Beef curry tasted better than the fried chicken as we felt the chicken is too dry and hard. The gave each plate a whole lady finger, there isn't much vegetables option, so that lady finger is the only vege in plate. Overall, I like the curry and gravy. The one who recommended us here told us, even with only curry and rice, it tasted good. I understand why he has such comment now.

Yoke Fook Moon 玉福满点心楼

My review on this dim sum place might have different from others. I did not manage to dine in it because I reached quite late, around 9:45pm and they were about to closed. I then checked with the boss there, isn't I see online and all other reviews that you actually open till 11pm. He said that is the old time, they changed the operating hours quite some time due to the street itself is quite dark and there were some cases happened nearby so they decided to close early.

In the end, I packed away my dim sum dinner.(or supper?). They did not have much left so we just got whatever they had since we were here and would like to try out. Taste might be vary if you dine in. What we see on below costed me almost RM50.

My brother & my SIL's comment: The dim sum cannot make it!!

My sister's comment: Ok lor!!

My Mum's comment: Not a fan of the dim sum but still ok.

My turn now. All the fried stuff that we had, I feel cannot make it may be because it is cold. The steam char siew bun - with a unique herbal taste(not sure if really herbal, but we all tasted that), is quite good for me. The siew mai tasted average. Prawn dumpling I did not have it.

Do drop by early if you want to try out their dim sum in hot!!

Dai Shu Geok (Big Tree Foot)

I did not purposely find this place for food but just pass by and found it when I got my biscuit and pastries. This is one of the famous eatery in Ipoh.

The food centre is build under or around the big tree root, that is why the name is called Dai Shu Geok (Big Tree Foot). Dai Shu Geok is read in Cantonese. Ipoh people tend to speak more Cantonese. There are quite a few stalls inside and I had tried some of them.

Fried 3 in 1 Rice Cake - a bit oily but quite good. It contains the yam, rice cake & potatoes.

  
Ice Blended Kacang(RM3) - I like this but will be great if less ice. The red bean is blended and taste good. It can be known when you can smell the red bean.

 

Yong tou Fu(RM11+) - Laksa Lai Feng + Yong Tou Fu, quite a special items, it tasted quite good. If you like warm stuff, advise you dip your yong toufu in the soup else it is quite cold. It charges by each item individually so it depends on what stuff you take. The only bad about this is all the items are fried so if you are a very healthy conscious people, you might not like it. However, do try it if you are here.

SS Club Ipoh

This is a very late post as it sit in my card for quite sometime. SS Club is at KL and they have branch at Lost World Tambun. It was a year and half ago when I visited them on their opening. I remembered we got free entry and just paid for our beverage. Drink are all standard, I got mine with good choice of non-alcoholic one. The burger tasted average. The pub's environment consider quite nice, but very noisy if you have more people and crowded. Great thing was the time we went in not much people, so we were still quite enjoy for this.

This time, when I visited Lost World Tambun again, I found that they seems closed, not sure it is temporarily for permanent.

Sing Eng Heong 新荣香

Another recommendation from friend. What is famous here? The Kaya Puff! What is so nice? The crispy skin and fresh from oven!

Good food doesn't come easily. What does that means? It means if you are coming on weekend or public holiday(which I did), you have to queue. Waiting time is at least 20mins or more. I was told, you can actually pre-order for the kaya puff. The shop also have other pastries you can buy, quite a lot of selection if you don't like the kaya puff.

The puff tasted good but as too sweet for me. I prefer low sugar version if they have.

Nam Heong White Coffee (南香白咖啡)

There are 3 famous white coffee shop at the street and all are just a thrown stone distance. You can try all 3 at one go if you like.

I learned that Nam Heong is the originator of Old Town White Coffee. This coffee brand is currently one of the most famous brand in Malaysia and Singapore. The coffee shop is really crowded. You have to get prepare for at least 15mins wait for the tables.

The coffee shop served dim sum and my friend said the egg tart here is very nice. Basically all the pastries that we ordered below were good.

Here go the famous white coffee. Very nice and very sweet. Although it is nice but cannot have too much, I am worry about my sugar level will go up.

Fried Kway Teow林烽蕉叶炒粿条 - the fried kway teow that served on banana leave believed to be the best in Ipoh. I only know when I preparing this article. Smell and tasted quite good.
