Portuguese Egg Tarts Tour

Macau is famous for its Portuguese Egg Tarts. I am fans of Portuguese Egg Tarts so I tried quite a few bakery and concluded which one is my no 1 Portuguese Egg Tarts. Lord Stow's Bakery is the winner!!

Below is the ranking in order for my favorite Portuguese Egg Tarts.
  1. Lord Stow's Bakery
  2. Tea Plus
  3. Margaret's Cafe e Nata
  4. 新好利咖啡
  5. 咀香园饼家
  6. 鉅記餅家

Located at Coloane, it is located a bit far from Macau City. However, there are bus available to this little town. I went to the original bakery shop, there is no space for you to sit down and enjoy. You can bought the egg tarts or whatever bakery item and enjoy it at the park just opposite the bakery shop. We did that.

If you walk about 5 mins in either direction, you'll also find the cafe offshoots where you can sit down in air-conditioned and serviced comfort. There are 2 Lord Stow's cafes in Coloane town.

The skin of the egg tart is great, crispy and make me wanted to have another one. The filling slightly sweeter for me but still very nice overall. Another must try stuff is their homemade yogurt, that is really great. I love that too.

Their cookies looks tempting and I bought two. However, I am not able to taste them as they were lost while flew back from Hong Kong to Singapore.

新好利咖啡

I know about this cafe but did not purposely went to find it as I actually forget to note down where is it. However, I just walked by when I was looking for the famous pork chop bun. It is just along the way. The cafe famous for its bird nest tart. As we were going to have the pork chop bun, so thought of just only try the   bird nest tart, so I did not get to try their egg tart actually.

How is the taste? Well, bird nest itself has no taste, so this tart it tasted like milk tart more but you can see something like jelly. Overall, the taste is good, skin quite crispy, could be because it was just taken out not long from the oven and not that sweet.

鉅記餅家

You basically can see this bakery shop every where in Macau especially those tourist spot. They are famous for its almond cookies and egg rolls. They have very wide variety of the traditional biscuit. Since they are so famous, I was thinking how is their egg tarts, it looked good. However, I am quite disappointed with it. The skin was not crispy & oily and the filling was very very sweet. So it is ranked last in my list, unless you really cannot find other egg tarts place, else I think probably you will get better from the rest.

Margaret's Cafe e Nata

I purposely went to find this cafe as I knew this is one of the famous egg tart place. It is not that easy to find as it situated quite hidden in an alley. When I reached there, I already saw there was a queue. So I quickly made my way to the queue too. There were almost 10 plus people in front of me, and I queued for around 15mins for it. There was no seat as the cafe was full. Hence, I take away the egg tarts.

The skin was crispy but very oily, I like the filling as not that sweet. I wasn't too sure if normally the skin also oily as the day I bought, if that is the same, then I think I won't want to queue for so long for it. However, for those who come to Macau for the 1st time, it is still worth to try out.

How to get there: At ferry terminal, take a free shuttle bus to Lisboa Casino. Margaret’s Café e Nata is just 200m away from Lisboa Casino. All you have to do is walk towards the direction of Senado Square.

Tea Plus

Tea Plus located at Senoda Square, you will walk pass it when you are on the way to Ruins of St. Paul Cathedral.

I am actually attracted by the pork chop bun at first, but then I noticed the cheaper price of the egg tart compare to the rest of the brand. However, it give me a feeling like the place should be selling bubbles tea so I dun really expect much from here.

I took away a pork chop bun and 2 egg tarts. The side of the egg tarts slightly smaller than the others, I think that is why it is cheaper by MOP 2-3. It is rated as No 2 in my egg tart list, pastry is crispy and not that sweet and what make it better over than Margaret's, because it is not that oily. Kinda surprised me the shop like this actually have better egg tarts. However, compare with Lord's Stow, I still feel Lord's Stow win over Tea Plus.

While blogging this session, I did a search online to find out the address, only then I realized it is famous because of the smash hit Korean TV Drama, Boys Over Flowers. Obviously, I am not the certfied Korean Drama as I din even watch the Boys Over Flowers

Price: MOP 10/2pieces

Address: 7 R. da Palha, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro

How to get there?
From Senado Square, take the route towards the Ruins of St. Paul. You will see the stall standing at the right side of  Rue de Palha.

This is another famous biscuit place in Macau. You can see it every way. I like their egg rolls which I feel better than another one. While buying the biscuit as souvenir, I was thinking, since I tried quiet a lot of egg tart, might as well try this. So I bought one to try. The tasted average, skin and filling just fine.

My conclusion will be, the egg tarts from the cafe are way better than the one you bought in the famous biscuit shop.
