Carpenter and Cook Jr

I wanted to visit carpenter and cook cafe at Lorong Kilat but location is quite far and not very accessible for me. Glad to learn about that there is this jr type open at Upper Thomson area.

This is not a cafe but more to take away bakery. It does have a small area which consists only 3 chairs at the counter for you to dine in. I did that after my walk at Mactrichie. Originally I wanted to pack back but we saw the seat and asked the lady if we could sit down to enjoy the coffee and pastries.

Since this is take away outlet, the coffee is served in paper cup and no latte art. The lady said she is working part time and cannot do the fancy type but she will try to. All the hot food and cakes are made in the shop except the croissant and some bread.

The bakery also have new creation - a love shaped Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting for National Day, available from 1st - 15th Aug 2014 only! I forget to take down the cute minicake but you can view on the Facebook page by the link above.

Flat White($5), Cappuccino($5) - the coffee here is no good to me, almost not much coffee taste and very milky. If you like milk based coffee, I think you will like it. My girl friend have the same comment as me.

Ham & Cheese Croissant($4.50) - the croissant is crispy and I like the way that the ham is toasted cripsy too. It might be slightly dry.

Mushroom & Roasted Pepper Quiche($6) - great combination for me. My friend like the cripsy skin and I felt slightly too thick for me.

Lemon Cream Tart($6.5) - the version here just nice, not the best I had but good to try out.

E-Sarn Thai Corner

My friend recommended me this Thai restaurant while I was thinking what to eat and we happened to pass by it. She said she tried the tom yum clear soup and it is yummy.

An air conditioning restaurant definitely the best choice on this super hot weather. E-Sarn offers quite a large range of thai cuisines. After comparing the main menu and the set lunch menu, we decided to go for set lunch as it is more worth and come with drink.  You can top up additional $$ to change your drink option. Lunch set($7.5+) include a main course and drink. My friend had coffee and I topped up $2.5+ for young coconut.  We both added $2+ for tom yum seafood soup.

Beef Noodles Soup - beef broth with beef meatball and beef brisket. Tasted fine for me, I usually did not order this so not too sure where is the standard but it is fine for me.

Tom Yum Seafood Soup - the $2 add on, a bowl of seafood soup which you can find sliced fish, prawn and squid, looks very oily so before had the soup, I tried to removed the oil 1st. It tasted good, spicy enough for me.

Pad Ki Mao - fried kway teow with assorted vegetable, basil leaves, chicken and egg. Me and my friend quite like this as it has one unknown aroma smell(non basil), a bit not use to have basil leave in fried kway teow but the taste is really good.

Ming Fa Fishball

After 3-4 hours hike, we went to Upper Thomson to fix our hungry stomach. Initially we want to go to a cafe but the queue was long so we went to Guardian to get plaster to fix my injured leg. We then passed by this noodles house and got attracted with the picture and the crowd. So we decided to go in. They are having branch stall at other place in Singapore.

The fish ball seems is the signature.  I got Small Wok Noodles($4.50) and my friend got the Minced Meat Noodles aka Bar Chor Mee[in Hokkien] ($4). How is the taste? I am not a fancy fishball lover. The way I actually determine whether a fish ball is good is it cannot have the fishy taste. You might be telling me fish ball of course have the fish smell but what I cannot accept is the very fishy kind like not fresh taste. The fish ball here dun have such taste and quite chewy. Overall it tasted quite good for me. I will be back for the next visit.

You can also buy their frozen fish ball and other food via their Facebook page.

Habitat Coffee

Another great hangout place without charges,  what you saw on the menu is what you need to pay for your meal. Initially we wanted to have lunch here but due to the crowd and more than 30mins waiting time, we went to other place for lunch. However they called us within 15mins, too late as we ordered our lunch. Nevertheless, we still told them to hold the seat for us after 30mins as I wanted to have coffee at their cafe.

We got our coffees and Tiramisu ($3.90). I had Cappuccino($4.90) and it comes with nice latte arts and tiramisu should be one of the cheapest and nice I had although without alcohol. Their cake average sold at $3.90 per piece, not sure whether they made it themselves or they catered from other bakery shop. Their brunch looks good, can try next time if I pass by again.

Fatboy's

What is burger meant for me? Answer is fast food, so I never or try to avoid order burger when I go to any restaurant. I used to have burger at McDonald, KFC etc and most of the are quite standard. Burger is not just fast food when I visited some burger places.

At Fatboy's, you have many variety to choose from . You can browse the MENU and everything looks so tempted that you dun know which to choose. I found myself easier as I normally will choose any burger with mushroom, so what attracted me is their Swiss Shroom. Other than the signature burger, you can have some drinks to go along, just request for what you want!

Swiss Shroom($13.90++)- Beef chuck patty, sauteed Shitake mushrooms, melted swiss cheese with garlic aioli on a whole meal bun. You can choose to replace your fries with coleslaw on request, as not feeling like wanting to have fries on the dining day but their fries looks good with thick cut. Will try that next time. I love the burger and it is huge portion to me. Tasted really good but kind of too salty to me. Other than that, no complain for the meal.

Penang Recipe

I was actually not very hungry when the dinner time reached as before that we ate too much when having a short walk at the upper Thomson.  My friend choose this Penang food just because he wanted something not too heavy. I was still full so I just ordered some prawn paste chicken wings to try out.

According to my friend, this version cannot compare with the actual Penang Prawn Noodles. I am not Penang people, so to me taste is about the same. The prawn paste chicken tasted average, it can be better.

Auntie Kim's Korean Restaurant

I had been to this korean restaurant once with my sister but I guess I forget to blog this. I cannot remember what I had. The only memory is the ginseng chicken soup.  Most of the time I will order that as it is light and great in taste.  The ginseng chicken soup here tasted quite good too.

This time round I came with 2 friends and as usual we ordered ala-carte and shared. We had kimchi soup, the seafood pancake and BBQ pork. We were lucky we were there at 6pm and no need queue, when it reached 6:30pm, we started to see the crowd. The food here consider quite expensive but still attracted so many people, so it should have something really good. oh ya..they served free tea. :)

Kimchi Chigea($14.50++) - Kimchi stew with taofu in clay. The portion is very small, it has to go with rice as it is quite salty. Tasted good but a bit too strong for me, hence I feel salty even I eat with rice.

The side dishes and you are only allow to refill for 3 times(We actually thought that) but when we wanna refill, we were told, is only refill for 3 items.

Doi Ji Mok-Sal($22++) - Pork shoulder meat marinated with special sauce. This is really good especially eat with the fresh vegetables. I always love this.

Hae Mool Jeon($16++) - Korean pancake with mixed vegetables and seafood. I dun really found the seafood inside, but notheless, it tasted good.

Salted Caramel

There are so many ice-cream shops at upper Thomson, at least 6 at the same area. We cannot try so many so we choose 1 and went in. Why this shop? Because the name is interesting.

Since the shop named as Salted Caramel, for sure I wanted to try this. We were not sure whether this is signature, we suppose it is. I got waffles topped with salted caramel & rum and raisin ice-cream. My friend love salted caramel. At first I am thinking salty and sweet will taste a bit weird but it apparently quite nice.

Rum & raisin just nice for me as I am not alcoholic but I think for the rest who love alcohol taste, this may be just too normal as less alcohol taste.

The Roti Prata House

I went back to this place after more than 6 months where suddenly me and my friends we had craving on prata again. She never been here, so thinking to try some special prata, as most of the prata elsewhere not the crispy type. This round I was a bit disappointed so as my friend as she was thinking to have those very special kind.

We ordered 3 crispy prata($0.90 each), 1 egg prata, 1 bomb kaya, 1 banana prata and 2 pieces of cripsy fried chicken($4 each), of course the teh tarik($0.90) as usual. The teh tarik still same as last time, not really my liking, crispy fried chicken I felt less taste. These 2 items, I prefer the one near my house, the Haji Karim. Crispy prata and bomb prata somehow I feel quite think and I had a feeling like eating bun. The bomb prata not the same as I had in Malaysia, it is not mixed well, you can only find kaya at one side. According to one of my friend, it suppose to come out like a bomb, round then later it will become flat but we don't see that effect. In KL, I seldom see such bomb effect but the taste of Roti Bomb(Bomb Prata) tasted better than here. Credit to the egg prata and banana prata, especially banana prata, I feel this is really nice compare to the one I tried at Prata Raya.

My friend introduced me to this crispy prata house which he claimed to be nice. What did I ordered? Prata must come with teh tarik, that is the best combination. So we got teh tarik and famous crispy prata, one plain and another egg version.

If I looked at the menu, there are quite a lot of choices on prata but only the original is crispy. So dun forget to try the plain prata here.

This is not the best I had but definitely is good. The teh tarik can be improved. The prata is crispy and crunchy, and when served with curry. I just love prata so much:)

If the staff there have more smile I think will be better too. They looked a bit "stress".
